Why Your Ears Pop When a Plane Takes Off
Your middle ear has a small pocket of air sealed behind your eardrum, connected to your throat by a narrow passage called the Eustachian tube. As a plane climbs, the air pressure in the cabin drops — and the air trapped in your middle ear is suddenly at higher pressure than the air around it, pushing your eardrum outward and making sound feel muffled.
The “pop” is your Eustachian tube briefly opening (often triggered by yawning or swallowing) and letting that trapped air escape to equalize the pressure. It’s a small, everyday reminder that gas pressure — the same idea behind thermodynamics — is constantly acting on your body, not just inside sealed containers in a physics lab.
